info for practitioners and those who research & commisson care for queer elders
Chris Lehmann (she/they), founder of queerageing.uk
how you can make a difference
– Academics can stimulate more opportunities to address the deficiency in radical research methods and contextual histories about diverse ranges of lived experiences, identities and kinship groups
– Social care professionals can listen to and engage with queer elders via ’co-production’ – working in partnership by sharing power between people who draw on care and support, and their oddkin
– All professionals can ensure queer ageing becomes a commonplace discussion across research through the utilisation of discussion forums and platforms for authentic experiences to be shared, including through social groups and awareness campaigns
– Amplifying queer-perspective life stories can offer important opportunities for discussion: academics and campaigners can share these with funders, strategists and policymakers
– We can create cross-sector discussions about how social work policy and practice (including training) can be improved in a meaningful way for queer elders
